I try to modifed the Joed's drawing but I just can't get it to work on moi but Joed if you do move single 14-2 from one three way box to other location so it will be what I called feed thru three way set up so that way I leave netural there in both boxes.

Merci.
Marc
There will be a neutral in both boxes. One three way has feed and light at upper switch. Second three way has feed at upper switch and light at lower switch. Neutral and travellers come through the 14/3 cable.

To load a drawing use the paper clip icon and ATTACH an image. You can upload it from your PC. It does not need to be hosted on the web. Make sure it is small enough size. JPEG images are best as they take up less space. You might need to go to 'advanced' to get the atachment icon. It does not appear in basic editting mode.

Help with 3 way dimmer wiring.

joed using your diagram. That would be 1 14/2 power wire, 1 14/2 to lights, 2 14/3 to the other box and 6 wires from the 2 dimmers. That adds up to 16 wires plus a ground, not to mention the pigtails I may need.
1. What size box would I need?
2. Does it make a difference whether power goes to the dimmer or 3 way switch first?
3. What is a switch loop? Is it power to lights and then to switches.

Help with 3 way dimmer wiring.

1. the count for the fisrt switch box is 10 wires + 1 ground + 4 for dimmers = 15 wires *2 = 30. you need 30 cubic inch box add 2 cu for each internal connector you have. A standard double gang box should be around 38 ci.
2. Makes no difference whre power goes first.
3. yes.

Help with 3 way dimmer wiring.

Thanks for all the help so far. I was just thrown a curve ball today. The house I am doing the work in, my daughter's, used to be a duplex. The previous owners converted it to a single. There was a wall separating the 2 halves of the basement. It was drywalled with the old 2' X 8' drywall where the switches are going. I decided to tear it all off and put up 4 x 8 sheets. When I pulled it apart today, I found it was framed with 2 x 3 instead of 2 x 4. The 2 gang boxes for 2 x 3 walls will not give me enough cubic inches for the wire. I am going to look at the 3 gang boxes to see if they will give me what I want. If they do I will get a couple of plates with 2 switch holes and a blank. If you don' mind I will get back to this thread in a couple of weeks. I am doing this when I have time available.

Help with 3 way dimmer wiring.

OK I'm back on track. I strapped the studs so i can now put in the 2 gang boxes. While doing it I found that the current wiring (single 3- way switch) has the power coming into the second box the one that will have the 2 - 3 way switches feeding the first box then to the lights. How do I wire it so I can have 2 dimmers in the first box and 2 - 3 ways in the second.

If I understand correct power is at one switch and the light is at the second switch. It will be wired like this. Do it twice. A dimmer wires the same as a witch. It will have a common wire and two travellers.

Help with 3 way dimmer wiring.

JOED There are going to be 2 sets of lights controlled by 2 - 3 way dimmers in the first box and 2 - 3 way switches in the second box. Your diagram shows power to switch then to dimmer then to lights. Can I run one of them as power to switch then "T" off to lights and dimmer? I like the visual style you gave me as I can understand it better.

Help with 3 way dimmer wiring.

Simply do the circuit twice. Once for each set of lights. The one listed as switch1 will not actually be a switch it will be a dimmer. 3way dimmers are installed exactly the same as 3way switches. The power wire will be pigtailed to geed both dimmers. Actually dimmers usually have wires so no pigtails will be needed. Simply connect both common wires to the power wire.

Help with 3 way dimmer wiring.

OK So I will use the power that is coming into the second 2 gang box. One of the 3 ways will have a 14/2 feed to the lights and a 14/3 to the dimmer in the first 2 gang. the other 3 way will have a 14/3 to the dimmer in the first 2 gang and that dimmer will have a 14/2 feeding the other set of lights. Correct?
