Help with 3 way dimmer wiring.

I am in the process of finishing a basement. I currently have a 15 amp circuit coming from the panel to a pull chain light in the front half and continuing to a pull chain light in the back half. I am putting in recessed lighting in a acoustical ceiling. What I would like to do is use the existing circuit to put in 2 sets of lights with 2 600w 3-way dimmers and 2 3-way switches. I am replacing the pull chain fixture with 4" work boxes and plan to wire from there. The dimmers will be in a 2 gang box in the front half and the switches in a 2 gang box in the back half. The front half will have 4 lights and the back half will have 5 lights. What is the best way of wiring this to reduce the number of wires going into the 2 gang boxes? The running of any wires are not a problem as I have not put up the drywall yet. Thank you.

Help with 3 way dimmer wiring.

One way that sounds logical from your description. There are many other scenarios that will work. Can you post a layout of the room.
14/2 power from one of the converted light junction box to the dimmer box. Two 14/3 cables to the second switch box. 14/2 cable from dimmer box to front lights. 14/2 from second switch box to back lights.

Help with 3 way dimmer wiring.

on the cable going from the 4" round box to the 2gang:
splice the white wire on the 2nd set of 14/3 to the black on the switch leg going to the high hat. the red and black on the 14/3 are your travelers and are going to be wired to the dimmer (usually 2 red wires).

splice the remaining white wires (neutrals) together with each other.

on the 1st 14/3, black and red (again, the travelers) are going to the 3way dimmer (usually red wires).

the 14/2 providing power, black goes to both dimmers (black wires).

at the 2nd 2 gang box:
the 2nd set of 14/3, the white is now your common. this white wire will be wired to the common of the 3way switch (black screw). the red and black are your travelers.

the 1st set of 14/3, splice the white with the white from the 14/2 going to the high hat. the black and red are your travelers. the black on the 14/2 is going to your common screw on the 3way.

at the 4" round, splice blacks together and whites together. ground accordingly.

p.s. - make sure you turn the power off and ground everything accordingly

Help with 3 way dimmer wiring.

heartlessmcfly no I really do not understand. I guess what I am thinking to limit the number of wires going to the 2 gang boxes. I thought that I could wire the power into a dimmer #1 in one 2 gang end and to switch #2 in the other 2 gang. They would feed back to the otherboxes with the 14/3.
Can the following be done: 1. change existing 2 lights to 4" work boxes 2. the first box to feed the second but also feed the lights on the first dimmer switch which feeds its 3 way switch in other switch gang box. 3. box 2 feeds the 3 way switch which feeds its 3 way dimmer in the dimmer gang box

You can wire it so that in each 2gang box it'll have 2 14/3's in each but the wiring could be tricky if ur not familiar with electric

The simpliest way is to run 2 14/3s from first 2gang to 2nd and 14/2 from First 2gang to power and lighting. 2nd 2gang to lighting

No need to feed power into two boxes. That adds one more cable than you need. If you want to eliminate one cable in the switch boxes then you could bring power to one light of each set and wire the switches as switch loops.
Can you post a larger image. I can't really see a lot on the one you posted.

Just run the 2 14/3's between both 2gangs. One 2gang will have 2 14/3's, 1 14/2 for your feed. The other 2gang will have 2 14/3's, 2 14/2 switch legs

Help with 3 way dimmer wiring.

I was looking at the diagram the second one is little more clear on this one so let me run by this one for ya.

Pull the exsting power sorce from the orginal pull chain luminaire socket { the second one you will have to ditch it anyway unless you want to keep it for ceiling fan feed }

From the pull chain luminaire to the two gang switch box pull the 2.5mm≤ twinner { 14-2 NM } cable there first then pull 2.5mm≤ Triplex { 14-3 NM } ( you will need two set on this one ) from first switch box to second switch box after that the 2.5 twinner's will go each group of recessed can luminaires.

The reason why I will recomend this set up so you don't have to mess around with switch loops and what more you will have netural conductor ready in both switch boxes in case you will have master / slave dimmers { basically they are multi location dimmers } and to be one step ahead due the 2011 NEC code requirement for netural in the switch boxes.

Merci.

Help with 3 way dimmer wiring.

I try to paste the drawing seems not working here for some reason.

I try to modifed the Joed's drawing but I just can't get it to work on moi but Joed if you do move single 14-2 from one three way box to other location so it will be what I called feed thru three way set up so that way I leave netural there in both boxes.

Merci.

Help with 3 way dimmer wiring.

May help a little bit.

I'm a visual person, and this site has really helped me figure out a couple 3 way situations in the past couple weeks.
