Having trouble installing a digital timer

I've seen similar threads, but it seems each configuration is unique. I am trying to replace an old digital switch with a new one. The switch controls outside lights, and was originally controlled by a second switch in the garage, in addition to the inside switch which is being replaced. When I installed the original digital timer, which I believe was intended for a 3-way circuit, I put a jumper across the second switch in the garage. My replacement timer apparently is not intended for a 3-way switch. I installed it (after determining which wire is neutral), but the switch does nothing. I assume the problem has something to do with the 3-way circuit. Is there any way I can configure the circuit to work with this timer? I don't need to use the switch in the garage.

The switch controls outside lights, and was originally controlled by (along with?) a second switch in the garage.

When I installed the original switch, which I believe was intended for a 3-way circuit (bought that way because you have a 3 way circuit?), I put a jumper across the switch in the garage.
Focus on this statement and ideally with a picture of the device...
explain exactly what you did

I installed it (after determining which wire is neutral), (whoa! when did a neutral come into the picture.... explain pls) but the switch does nothing.

Yes, everything about this "has something to do with the 3-way circuit."

probably not... as you have described needing a 3way switch...
I don't need to use the switch in the garage.
remember that jumper you cobbled together? explain pls
That's the best I can do with this.

While trouble shooting---where is the power? where is the switch leg? In the timer box or the garage box?

A white connected to the 3 way switch is not a neutral.

Jim, is it possible that the the problem is at the fan? That is also where the 3 way wire changes to 2 wire. At the light both the black and white are hot.
