have 50 feet of 10/2 w/g wire


I have this new box of 10/2g and want to run a circuit into the garage for a freezer. I've been sitting on this box since 06, would be nice to use it up and not have to buy another box of 12/2 just for this.

According to the box, 10/2 looks to be overkill for my intended purpose but is it "legal" to run 110v, 15 or 20a over the 10/2?

Use it. Put on a 20A breaker. The electrons will flow more freely thru the larger wire. It will make them happy.

It will be more difficult to terminate around the terminals of the recep unless you pick up a higher grade recep with lug style terminals.

Mike, not an electrician but I would not hesitate to run a lower amperage on a larger wire which will have less resistance (i think). The only worry I would have is if you try to run MORE than 15 amps on 14/2, more than 20 on 12/2. 10/2 for 15 amps is completely overkill, but should work just fine.

Is this an attached garage, if not, other rules apply here.

Yes, it is fine, I would pig tail it at the outlet junction box to 12awg to make the connection to the outlet.

The larger wire will actually reduce voltage drop and save you money, on that size run, about $3 over the next 100 years or so.

What's the average resistance of a pigtail splice done correctly?
I'm wondering whether using a splice in the outlet box would negate the lower resistance of the #10 wire.
In any case, I would use the higher grade receptacle that will take #10.
I just don't like "unnecessary" splices.

Thanks for the replies, it is an attached garage on a raised ranch, of course they put the panel on the far end of the house.

I bought a 20amp GFI just a little bit ago for the end, I spent the $ and got the better of the two but the screws don't seem any bigger.

BTW, #10 wire fits into the P&S GFCI's which have the lug style terminals.

Look at the back of the GFCI receptacle. There should be holes for the wire with pressure plates that compress the wire. No need to wrap screws with GFCI recepts. Just tighten the screw with the wire in the hole. You must loosen the screw first, then insert. The #10 should fit in just fine with the compression connection. You can use a #12 pigtail if you prefer, but you must use no larger than a 20 amp breaker.
