Hard wired smoke detectors

HELLO; I am about to wire 9 smoke detectors in different rooms.
I make a connection to a junction box in the attic, and start
the run from there.
First smoke detector is connected black to black with a pigtail
to the detector; white to white; ground to ground with a
pigtail to the detector box.
The second smoke detector is a different set-up:
The instructions say: connect red wire to the interconnect
wire from the detector which is usually yellow.

QUESTION: Why do we continue now with red wire?
Was not there the black hot wire to connect all detectors
in series? Is it right to connect red wire to yellow wire?
WHY this extra red wire?
I APPRECIATE ANY ADVICE THANKS.

The red wire is used to set off all the other detectors in the event that one of the detectors goes off.

yes,the red connects to yellow.when the detector goes off,low voltage(about 9 volts) is put on red wire (yellow wire)to set off the rest of the detectors.

The red wire can be red, yellow or orange. There should have been instructions on how to wire the smokes. The instructions should also tell you how many can wired together. If you did not get instructions, they may be available on line.

Are you aware that you need to use a three wire from the first detector to all of the rest of the boxes to provide an interconnect? The power comes in on a two wire cable (black and white). You then run a three wire cable (black, red, and white) from the first box to the next box and continue running three wire cable to the rest of the boxes for the remaining smoke detectors. The first detector hooks up as you said with the yellow connected to the red wire. From there on out you connect the rest of the yellow wires for the other detectors to the red wire.
