Hampton Bay Fan control switch

The chain in my Hampton Bay fan broke off inside the switch. Bought a replacement at HD. Replaced the wires one for one, but all I get is high speed and can't shut it off. The control has four wires, black (hot) green, grey, and brown, and I've tried all combinations, but can't get the switch to work. The one thing I do know is that grey in #1 speed produces sparks. Can someone please help me out.

Thank you
Vince

Are you sure that you have the correct Point wire or Common wire from the switch wired to the power wire from the circuit? If you wired that incorrectly even once you could have done damage to the switch.

The other possibility is you bought a bad switch. NAFTA in action. The quality control left with the jobs.

Try by passing the switch and see if each of the speeds work correctly that way.
