Grrrr Smoke detectors not compatible??

This is for the house up north. Built in 03.

Went to replace a smoke detector today and bought a Kidde Firex hard wired detector. Came with a wiring harness with black red and white wires. Pulled the old one and it was black yellow and white.

Called Kidde and apparently when they bought out Firex they changed the wiring and I was told that they will never be compatible. They are telling me I would have to replace 16 hard wired smoke detectors including the wiring. Anyone else dealt with this?

I know that I can put in a battery only one but being as the house is being rented I would prefer the hard wired ones in case the batteries are not changed.

What are my options (if any)

Robyn

Replace them all, it's been 10 years.

The NFPA recommends that they all be changed after 10 years.

Depending upon what model you can interconnect up to 24 devices, 18 of which can initiate.

Sorry GAC, probably should have clarified its 16 over 2 houses.

I don't have an issue replacing them but the way the person was talking I have to replace all the wiring as well and not just the harnesses?

I'm not sure why you would need to replace all the wiring.
The homes were built in 2003, so I would guess that they are interconnected,(red, black, white, in the SD boxes)

just re-read your OP
I'm wondering if they meant the harnesses, not the house wiring

When you say one of the wires is yellow....is it the 3 wire pigtail on the old smoke detector?

If the yellow wire is one of the wires in your 14/3 NM cable....it's simple....the red wire on the smoke detector pig tail goes to the yellow wire on the nm cable.

What is real important....all of the detectors are the same.

The average life on a smoke is 10 years...on CO detectors, 7 years. In fact, when a CO reaches it's 7 year mark it starts chirping at you....nothing you can do but to replace it

The yellow is on the existing wiring. I will grab some pics tomorrow so you can see what I am looking at.

Existing as in the 14/3 that goes into the ceiling?

All that really maters is that you have 3 wires coming out of the ceiling and those 3 wires daisy chain to each smoke....

Black goes to black
White goes to white.
And the red on your new pigtail goes to the 3rd wire (yellow) in the romex.

I have the Kidd's as well....and I know the pigtail your talking about.

Just swap out all of them.....

The yellow was just the color used for the interconnect.
