Because THAT'S how inspectors get a god complex. Because no one likes to question them, they just box to them. Everyone needs to be kept in check once in a while. Besides, if you get on his bad side just for questioning one small thing he was bad to begin with.

Thankfully in NYS we use third-party private electrical inspectors, and most will actually talk to you about things, not just demand things.

Answers based on the 2008 & 2011 NEC.

I like working in NYS, most of the guys are very nice and easy to deal with. I have more issues working in Connecticut with the same Ex fire chief / electrical inspectors... ugh....

Must be nice. We have only have a construction board of appeals, which meets once a month, and they they usually just say they don't have any authority over local inspector decisions as long as they meet minimum code. The inspectors don't really have a boss except the township or county managers, and they don't know anything about their jobs, so they try and stay out of it. So basically, our inspectors do what they want, and nobody can really stop them.

The NEC is a permissive document, so MAKE him show you the violation you violated.
