Ground wire on jacuzzi pump?
When we had our house inspected before the purchase, the inspector noted the fact that the jacuzzi pump did not have a ground wire. How big a deal is that / how urgently should I fix it?
It's going to be marginally tricky in this case because the ground wire stud, assuming the motor has one, is on the far side of the motor from the access hatch. I'll probably need a mirror on a pole to see what I'm doing. Thanks! |

Does the report say ground wire or a bond wire is missing? The ground wire should be in the cable feeding the tub.
A bond wire may not be needed, depending on the piping material used.

Im betting it doesn't have a bond wire, and probably doesn't require one.

Ground wire on jacuzzi pump?
Now that I look, it doesn't actually say anything about it on the report. I just remember the inspector mentioning it to me as we did the walk through. He said there should be a ground wire attached to the pump that runs either to a ground stake under the crawlspace or to cold water plumbing. He didn't see one and thought the terminal for it was probably on on the far side of the pump from the access hatch.

A ground stake or rod would do absolutely nothing beneficial for the tub.

Even if it were required, NEITHER of the two options he suggested is proper or necessary.

I have seen some manufactures require a #8 from the motor back to the electrical panel, which I completely ignore, because that also serves no purpose and is just some jackass misinterpreting the NEC... The only requirement by the NEC is to bond the recirculating piping, if applicable, all tubs today are strictly plastic, so its a moot point.

Ground wire on jacuzzi pump?
I didn't state that it was required. I stated that "if" it was required. And I have neither the time nor desire to dig through all of my code books all the way back to the late sixties to find out.

The thing with the all in one home inspectors is they hold up the sale of a house by their opinions. Buyers get leary.
