ground wire and box pigtail same size?

Can I use a #12awg to ground my air conditioner j-box and connect it to the #10 wire that grounds my air conditioner? My AC has a #10 ground wire coming through the box, but the steel j-box that feeds it is not grounded. I want to bond the ground to the box at the ground screw that is provided. It's not a question of whether it needs it, (it does), it is whether I can drop down a wire size on the pigtail.

You can't downsize the ground until over a 30 amp circuit.
