Ground bar neutral bar question?

I saw something and did not realize it at the time because I am not an electrician.

The sub panel has the bare copper or ground wire going to one bar. The white or neutral wire going to another bar. That looks right.

The main panel has all the bare copper ground wire's going to one bar and all the neutrals/white wires going to the other bar. I've never seen that before.

I questioned it later and was told that is how the inspector wants it done. This is a residential installation, I do not know if the ground and neutral are bonded in either box.

Is this code now, that the wires must go to separate bars, in the main panel? The reason I ask I am getting a quote from the electrician that did this job and it does not seem right. JIm 0311

Ground bar neutral bar question?

The main panel has the neutrals and the grounds on the same bar or on bars that are electrically connected.

Ground bar neutral bar question?

Can you post a pic? Often times I install the add on ground bar even when not required.

Are you sure this "main panel" is a main? To understand this you will have to verify if there is some other disconnect between the meter and this panel or if the wires from the meter connect directly to this panel's main breaker.
