grandfather's law license

What do you guys think of the "grandfather's law" and the "sparkys" that spawned out of it, and would you like to see that law in effect again.

Well on Texas its a law that if you can prove you are a third generation electrician in your family or so, it grants you the master electrician license after a small test.

grandfather's law license

Generally, a "grandfather clause" refers to when a new licensing law is enacted: Those individuals who are already in the business who would be required to get a license under the new law are granted one without the exam.

There is a fixed period of time in which to apply under such a provision, and once that expires no one else is approved without the requisite exam.

I figure that an urban legend has developed in your situation here....

OK, now I get it. From the title of your original post, I thought maybe your grandfather was a lawyer LOL. But what you're really asking about makes no sense. How does having a father and grandfather who were electricians say anything at all about what YOU know?? If such a law actually exists, I'm pretty sure you're misinterpreting it.

grandfather's law license

From what I've seen, Texas passed a law in 2003 to require electrician's to become state licensed.

Prior to that, licensing was done on a local level or not at all.

The law took affect 9/1/2004. Under the grandfather provision, if you held a local license and had required work experience, you would be exempt from the state license examination and issued a license. This had to be completed by 6/1/2004. After that, you're SOL.

The only other way your grandfather(or anyone else for that matter) would have anything to do with it is, if he was a master electrician, he could say you worked under his license for X amount of hours and would enable you to sit for the state examination.
