good free software for drawing up electrical plans

I am going to take some plans down to the permit office hopefully tomorrow morning. I have some rough sketches done by hand but I'd like something a little more formal looking, for example with straight lines.

What software have other people used for electrical drawings? Or have you just used handwritten ones?

Broderbunds Home Architect 3D used to be available for about $10. I would just use graph paper if the job is small.

How about Google SketchUp? I think you can D/L electrical symbols to that.

I'm rewiring the whole house but a lot of it is just putting back what was already there. There will be a few brand new circuits though.

Do they require a diagram ?
I've never had to submit anything

I went down there today and yes they did ask for a diagram. They said handwritten was ok so I think that will probably be faster. Nevertheless I've been doodling in SketchUp, pretty cool. Couldn't figure out how to import the electrical symbols into my drawing though. Maybe eventually.
