GFI Tripping when light turned off

I have read some posts on this issue, however I wanted to get input on my specific situation.

I have a circuit in my house which has a UPS plugged into a GFI. The UPS is used to keep my computer running long enough for a controlled shutdown in the event of a power failure. There are numerous times when the GFI trips when the room light is turned off. I am a computer guy not an electrician but I am generally handy. Any insight would be appreciated.

GFI Tripping when light turned off

First, it is generally a bad idea to have a UPS plugged into a GFCI unless you have no choice. Since surges are sent to ground, any surges that result in 5ma or more will trip the gfci.

Is this light and switch
1. on the same circuit as the GFCI
2. If so, is it downstream of the GFCi

If downstream it could be that the switch is bad is throws a ground fault while being turned off.

Try unplugging the UPS and flipping the switch. That would show whether the switch alone is at fault.

GFI Tripping when light turned off

Is the light fed from the GFI?

What kind of lamp is in the light? Maybe try a different kind of lamp.

Does the GFI trip when the UPS is not plugged into it?

Why is UPS plugged into a GFI?
