GFI Tester


I pretty much only use my plug in tester for 3 things:

A handy light to plug in to an outlet while I'm flipping breakers, so whoever is helping me can tell me when it's off.

A way to quickly test if an outlet is in fact protected by an upstream GFCI. (unless it's an ungrounded circuit, then it's no good for that..)

A quick check to see if an outlet is grounded. (Though frequently in older houses, when the tester shows normal, I'll still pull the outlet and check for a bootleg ground.)

Basically, if the tester shows any indication other than "Normal" I'll ignore what the chart says, grab my DMM and check it out myself.
