GFI Confusion
 
My daughter just purchased a home and I was checking the GFI in the Kitchen with my Outlet tester and received a Green and Red indicating a faulty Neutral.
When i checked the GFI it was wired Black- Gold Screw to both Load and Line and White - Silver to Load and Line, Green to Ground.
I did some testing to see what would work and I found when I disconnected both White wires from the GFI and tied them together along with a third short white wired, capped all three together and connected the short third wire to the Load - Silver screw and turned the power back on, I received two Green lights from my tester. Does this make sense, is this safe or is there something I'm missing?

Go back into that box...
BE CERTAIN that you identify the (always hot) LINE side cable.
BE CERTAIN the line and load side are on the right set of screws.
You can pigtail the grounds.

If this does NOT give you the correct reading on your meter...
1) check with another meter
2) replace the GFI device and start over

Your response leads me to believe I may have an issue or I did not explain correctly. To recap I know have one black wire going to the Gold Load screw, one black wire going to the Gold Line screw and ONE WHITE (which is the two whites tied together) wire going to the Silver Load screw and one ground going to the Green Screw. I DO NOT have a white wire going to the Silver Line screw. My tester shows me two greens lights indicating all is well. You asked me to check the HOT - Line and I see it as connected properly, please advise.

You have it wired incorrectly.
The white from the panel and the hot from the panel connect to the line side of the gfci.
The wires feeding other receptacles need to be connected to the load side.

Or you can wire both hots to the line side and both neutrals to the line side and replace downstream receptacles with gfci's.

The GFIC works by comparing the current going out the black wire and coming back on the white. If there is no leakage to ground, if you have 5.235A going out the black, you will have 5.235A coming back on the white. If you connect the load white to the line side, the toroid inside the GFIC does not see the return current and will trip.

So...lind terminals....black from the CB to gold terminal....white from your load center to the silver screw

Load side....black to gold load screw...white to silver load screw.

Thank You TarheelTerp and Jbfan for your responses. It sounds like the original configuration of Black and White to Line and Second set Black and White to Load was correct but that brings me back to why did the outlet tester show a faulty Neutral?

A loose connection on the neutral side.

Make sure you have right pair of wires connected to the line side.

Correct....a common mistake is to have one of the load and line wires swapped....

For example....if you wire the load neut to line and vice versa, it will show a fault....

In your case, with the load and line neut wired together, yea, your tester shows that it works...but the moment you put a load on it, the GFIC will trip.

Lesson Learned, bought a new GFCI and wired it correctly. Thanks Jbfan and ddawg16 appreciate you guys explaining it in layman terms.
