GFCI wouldn't reset, now it will

On Friday, I replaced the GFCI outlet (with the test-reset buttons) in the Master Bathroom. I made no other changes to the circuit itself. It worked fine for about 24 hours, then popped. It reset with no problem. A few hours later, it popped again, and would not reset. After I unplugged everything on that circuit, it still wouldn't reset. I went to bed, and when I got up in the morning, it reset fine, and now seems to be working. What would cause this?

Connections are tight.

On Saturday, a few hours before it popped the first time, we power washed the wall of the house that included an exterior outlet that is also on the GFCI circuit. Was just thinking, could water have seeped in and shorted it out, but dried out by morning? The circuit didn't pop until several hours after the power washing.

That may have been the problem. Has it tripped since? What kind of cover is on the outside? That may have been the problem all along. I would think about putting an in-use cover on the the outside to help keep more water out.
