GFCI/light switch combo not testing
In the kitchen I have an outlet with a GFCI on the bottom and a light switch on top. I wired it according to instructions I received here. The power coming in is from a two wire ungrounded wire. When I test the GFCI portion with my Gardner Bender tester the GFCI does NOT switch off when I press the test button. On the GFCIs in the bathroom this button makes them turn off and I have to reset them to work again.

Does this mean my GFCI outlet is not doing what it should?

Press the test button on the GFCI to see if it trips. If it does, then press the reset.

If that works, your GFCI is working properly.

Best of my knowledge those testers won't work on an ungrounded circuit, the only way to truly test it is with the test button on the GFI.

No everything is fine. External gfci testers need a connected ground line to work. The switch in the gfci face simulates a ground fault without the need for a ground hence the difference...
