It won't be able to power it, you will need a bigger generator

can i run either the heat pump or the well with some lights and the refrigerator. i was planning on using a interlock switch on the main breaker box and only turn on the needed breakers.

Generator capacity

Hey there Pappyvic2,

I recently purchased a Generac GP6500. This machine is rated at 6500 watts continues & 8000 watts surge. I tried to power a welder, which Miller powers with a 5500 watt continues generator, and my Generac wouldn't carry the load. I called Generac and they told me my engine is only 8.7 HP and Millers uses a Subaru engine with 14 HP. The conclusion I have drawn is; my Generac has more than enough electrical capability, but the engine doesn't have enough HP to power the generator. I have since noticed there are several other manufactures that offer engines with much more horse power than Generac on the same size machines. Dura-Max has one of this size with a 16 HP engine. If I were you I would research the horse power of prospective units more so than their wattage output.

Just my two cents, but I'll sell you this Generac I have for half what I paid for it and there is only about 2 or 3 hours on the engine clock.

Danny

It might be able to run both the well pump and the heat pump at the same time. A 30A breaker for a motor load probably indicates a continuous running current way lower than that. The heat pump may only draw 10A or so, and the well pump something similar. The only way to know is to try it and see if the generator will start both loads. You may find that one or the other needs to be started first.
