GE SunSmart 15312 3-way installation challenge.

Hello, I have a GE SunSmart 15312 3-way installation challenge and need help connecting the wires correctly.

I would like to install the GE swith in the upstairs part of a 3-way setup.

Upstairs has two(2) cables - Cable-1 W/Black and White Wires, Cable-2 W/Black, White, Red, Green Wires.

The White from cable-1 is connected to the Black from Cable-2.

The existing upstairs 3-way switch is wired as follows: Cable-1 Black to Common, Cable-2 White to terminal, Red to terminal, Green to Gound.

The downstairs has 1 cable W/Black, White, Red, Green wires; wired Black to Common, White to terminal, Red to terminal, Green to Ground.

What is the correct connection of the Black, White, Red, Blue wires from the GE 15312 to the cables/wires in the upstairs box? Help...

Rob

You can't use it in the upstairs box because you do not have a neutral wire.

Unfortunately, you have the same situation in the downstairs box also.

I imagine this is your current setup. By the way good explanation in the wiring setup in each switch location. Like that you identified cables and wires. I do not show any ground wires in the diagrams just for ease of drawing.

To remedy your situation if you could replace the 12-2 running from the light location to the up switch location with a 12-3 cable, you could have a neutral wire at the upstairs switch location

Thank you all for your replies and input. Will I have this issue with any 3-way timer or is there one you might know of that bypasses this issue?

If you do not want to fish a another cable that includes a neutral to the switch location, You need to find a 3-way timer that does not need a neutral wire which may be hard to find
