GE burner element hanging on a thread

My GE has 25 years on it. It was by no means top of the line when I bought it. Since there are no chefs in our home, there have been no complaints about the stove (who would know the difference).

Recently, don't ask me how, but my wife managed to burn herself and spill food all over the stove top. Later after things had cooled off on both fronts, I tried to clean up the burner. When I pulled it out of the fixed socket below, I was stunned to discover that over the years, one of the two folded over ends that fit into the socket was badly burned. The good end is 5/16ths wide (looks brand new) and the burned end was reduced down to a charred 2/16ths . I couldn't believe it could work in that condition. After I examined all, I found the two in the rear were in okay condition. Odd that only one end was effected!

I know I'll be advised to replace the two front burners, but at $37 each my question is why? They seem to work fine as is! My wife's argument is: new ones will heat faster. Is she on to something?

In that case, take the money you'd blow on the replacement burner and take her out to eat. Now that would make her really happy!

Heat faster and use less electricity to boot. Use some of the tax rebate check and replace them both. Suggest she take you out to dinner for being so thoughtful.
