GE 60 Minute Touch Auto Shut-Off Timer help please

I bought a GE timer for a bathroom fan. The timer can handle a light and a fan. I only need it for a fan.

The switch has black, white, ground, and blue. The wires in the box are white, black, and ground. The salesperson at Home-Depot said to cap the blue and wire it normally. I did that, and it brings power to the timer but the fan does not work.

I assume the blue wire needs to be hooked up, but where?

I hooked the white switch line to the capped off neutral in the junction box. Good news: the fan and timer for the fan work, bad news: the light on the fan doesn't work.

What was in the switch box and what did it control when you took it apart?

Timer requires a neutral. If you only have black and white in switch box then you can't use that timer. You need to find one that doesn't need a neutral.

I bought one. It's a piece of crap. The on off button has contact bounce, so when I decide I want to turn off and hit the "off/on" button, it would go click-click and turn off for a split second and come back on. I push it again, firmly in center, and it turns off. It's just poorly built in my opinion.

It is relay based like commercial grade stuff meant to function with electronic ballasts. This is the only timer switch I can find that works with electronic ballasts and CFLs, except the Pass & Seymour mentioned below.

The ones that do away with neutral do not work with CFLs and electronic ballasts.

I would get a Leviton 5-button timer if you don't need to use CFLs. Time settings are same. It does not have manually permanent on over-ride.

If you want to use with CFL, try Pass & Seymour 7 button. It's $30, but it has more time setting (1 and 5 minutes in addition to 10, 20, 30 & 60), + manual over ride. Lowe's actually has wired-up display unit which probably gets handled often and it works well. Item #: 314807 | Model #: RT1LACCV4 at Lowe's.

The timer white goes to the other whites.
The timer blue and black go to the other two black wires that are connected to the two screws. If one of the blue or black is listed as power in then that goes to the top single black.
