A funny smell of rubber behind my TV

Hey

I've been smelling this odd smell from behind my TV. It's like a rubbery smell and it's fairly strong. It seems to be coming from the vents behind the screen near where the Audio/Video inputs are.

I own a Panasonic LCD '48 inch screen TV.

Now I would have said that it's just purely an issue with my TV but last night, I started to notice this smell then the power/fuse box went out including all of my other appliances. We simply turned it back on and everything has worked fine but the smell still returns.

After I turned the powerpoint off, I felt the cords and wires and they don't seem to have overheated and the back of the TV doesn't seem to be hot at all.

I haven't seen any smoke emitting off my TV or any other sign. Things seem to be normal par the smell.

Does anyone have an idea of what this could be?

Thanks.

Get an electrician out to check the circuits in the home for any excess amperage pull on the one that tripped, as well as a general check-up on the wiring, before you lose the whole place.

This ain't a D I Y affair this is serious.

So are you saying that the smell is coming from inside the tv ?

Some odour is not unusual from tvs especially if they run a little
warm inside.

How old is the TV? It may have accumulated dust inside that is causing components to run a little hotter. Any way you could simultaneously blow air into the vent slits to stir up any dust and vacuum it out of the slits a few inches away? Go all the way across left to right.

The use of the term "Power point" tells me the OP may be from Australia.

They call receptacle outlets power points....

My guess KB is that they had a power surge, or the tv just gave up the Magic Smoke.

You can certainly narrow it down to "tv or not tv" by unplugging the TV for a while and seeing if the smell remains / you get another breaker trip.

Finally, someone here who understands the lowest common denominator.Troubleshooting 101.You did state in your OP that it smelled like it was coming from the vent. Why would you assume it's the TV?

He said it was coming from "the vents behind the screen near where the a/v inputs are." In other words, coming from inside the TV.

No, he said "SEEMS TO BE coming from...", and then expressed doubt that it was. Can't hurt to confirm.
