fluorscent light, two bulb 8 feet long.

When I turn on my light only one bulb light up. I then took that bulb and the other bulb out and change them and still only one side works. Why doesn't the other side work. Both bulbs are good.

The ballast is bad.

I agree with Joed. The ballast would be fairly simple to replace IF you can find the correct replacement. Be aware that there are TONS of configurations for ballasts - you need to make sure you get one that is for the correct T style of bulb (thickness of bulb = t8, t12, etc), as well as length (2 - 4 - 8 feet), as well as number of bulbs per fixture (single, double, triple, quad, etc). You should also try to get the same type of ballast (analog (old) vs electronic (new)) as the wiring may be a bit different on different types of ballasts.

If you can find a ballast that has all the same specs as your current ballast, changing would be as simple as opening the fixture, undoing a few wire nuts (document what colors went where), unscrewing old ballast, putting new ballast in, and putting wire nuts back together.

Finding the correct ballast is going to be your biggest obstacle - if you don't think you're up to it, replacing the entire fixture with a new unit might be easier. The new unit will likely come with an electronic ballast which SHOULD have a better service life.

Like teststrip said....finding the right ballast is the big problem.

Might be a good time to consider changing out to a T8 fixture....the fixture might be cheaper than a replacement ballast....not to mention the lower electrical use....

If this is a slimline { 8 footer single pin bulb type } then just ditch it and get new luminarie it cheaper than try to buy 8 footer slimline ballast and you will get more light than old one plus with new electronic ballast it is much quieter than old magatic ballast.

4 footer T-8 4 lamp 8 foot strip is common one and it will outlight the old school slimline no question asked plus a nice thing is no flicker as well.

This photo is near excat item what I am talking about and you will able find them in big box store.

Oh yeah most of them can lit up pretty cold without issue ( down to about zero degree F. )

Merci,

All connections should be checked too. Sometimes the wires in the tombstone dont make good connection. Also, make sure its wired correctly if anyone has messed with it
