flourescent light wattage

In order to try to save on electrical usage, I purchased an in-line amp/wattage digital meter that tells me how much power an appliance uses. Quite an eye opener. I checked a four foot, two bulb flourescent fixture in my garage and was surprised to see that it was using 300 watts. Is this normal? I was under the impression that these lights were more efficient than incandesent. Might there be something wrong with this fixture/bulbs that it is using so much power?

How about a link or a picture of the magical device you bought. Ever consider it was bunk?

Try comparing the wattage readings with something of a known value - like a 60w bulb. How does it read?

Then try something else, maybe your toaster. It should list the wattage on it somewhere.

How's that compare?
