Fitting a new ceiling light

Can anybody please help me, i have taken down my hall ceiling light and mixed up the wires there are 4 red 4 black and 4 earths which are all together.
I have separated the blacks and reds and dont no what to do now, i have a electric testing screwdriver and there is 1 permanent live.
Now that i have seperated all of these wires none of the lights in my house work at all which makes me think they are all part of a curcuit. Please can any body help before i strangle my wife for asking me to put a new light up ...

Fitting a new ceiling light

There is a UK section at this site.

It's not a DIY site but maybe you can get a referral there.

I'm thinking that your red/black = our black/white
