Fire alarm cable for speaker wire?

Hi all,

Can one use fire alarm plenum cable for speaker wire in a plenum ceiling? Will it pass code?

Is CL2 speaker wire rated for plenum ceilings?

Big difference in price!

Thanks

Other than maybe confusing someone, I don't see anything wrong with it.

Fire alarm cable for speaker wire?

I doubt the quality would be there if it's a really thin wire. I actually had thin speaker cable heat up with a decent size set of speakers and amp. Think it was 20 gauge. Cooked some of the insulation.

Fire Alarm wire comes in many sizes...normally, its 16 or 14-2 for the signaling circuit, and 12-2 for the notification circuit...at least for the systems I've installed.

FA wire here is 18/5 or 18/3. It would be acceptable for home theatre in a box type setups but any substantial speakers like #14 much better.

Well....if you listen to Monster Cable....anything less than 4Awg is going to hurt your sound performance.....Monster has to be one of the biggest rip offs there is.

Code....it's low voltage....you can use bailing wire if you wanted....but as K buz noted....if you use something non-standard....a few years from now we are going to see a post here where someone is asking "What are these wires for?"

With that said....do the math.....

If your pushing 200w to the speaker....that is a little under 2A of current....16awg or larger would be more than enough.

If possible...use speaker wire....less confusing in the long run.
