My house was build in 1946 with a standard doorbell system. Over 10 years ago it stopped working and I installed a wireless, battery operated system. Recently I heard a loud beeping noise (like the sound of a truck backing up) coming from the area of the old doorbell. It was not coming from the battery operated model. The is only a a small hole in the wall with a jumble of wires where the original chime had been mounted. I think that the chime is gone. After an hour, the beeping stopped. But it started again after 12 hours, and stopped after 15 minutes. Does anyone have an idea about the source of this beeping, and how to stop it? Thanks

Next time the beeping starts, check to see if it isn't coming from the smoke detector closest to that area . If it is, replace the battery.

If the chime is removed then the bundle of wires can not make a beeping sound. Check for a CO detector or a smoke detector.
