fan turns off when light is turned on

I just bought a new house and have a problem with one of my ceiling fans. The fan and light on the ceiling fan have seperate light switches on the wall. I can run the fan, but when I turn on the light, the fan loses power. The fan regains power after I turn the light out.

What should I do to correct this problem.

When you say "new", is it newly built? or new to you? If it was newly built, I would immediately contact the builder, and have him take the necessary actions to have this corrected.

If its new to you, as you are the newest owner, it may be as simple as the wiring being incorrect. We like to ask for pictures of the wiring where the switches are so we can troubleshoot from which we can see. Its a little complicated to try to guess whats going on from a description, or someone unfamiliar with wiring.

Fan loses power as in slows down but doesn't stop? Des the light get dim or bright if you turn the fan on or off? Sounds like a missing neutral and they are going in series instead of parallel maybe.

You need to tell us all the wring connection in the fan, light and switch boxes.

How many total watts or amps is the light? Anything else connected to the light - plugged into it?

I'm assuming you have a regular bathroom light and bulbs? Not some super powerful heat lamp or whatever?

Sounds to me like the fan is wire off the light switch loop. Until we know how it is all wired up we can't offer any help.

Funky use of a 3 way switch?
