Fan resets after light switch is toggled

Hi, I personally installed a fan in our bedroom with a remote. It is wired to a regular flip switch. The remote works great when the switch is on, but when we turn it off everything is reset. For example, we turn the fan and light on, then turn the switch off and back on, and the fan and light do not come back on. So, the settings are not persistent. This is a pain when we walk into the room and the remote is not handy, we are not able to turn the light on until we find the remote. Did I wire it wrong, or do we need a different switch? Thanks for any help!

You need a new remote receiver

Those things are not supposed to "forget" the previous settings when you use the wall switch like that.

Take it back and demand a new one.

Fan resets after light switch is toggled

The subject of using wall switches with remote controlled fans has been discussed several times in another forum. Most agree the switch is required as a disconnecting means. Some say no switch is required, just the remote.
I can say personally, that if I turn off the switch to the remote controlled fan, it works just like it should when I turn the switch back on. I agree that you should get a replacement receiver.

Ps....The fan pull chain must be on high and the light turned on always.

Volatile memory, as opposed to non-volatile memory. You need to leave the switch on.

Some devices handle this by having a keep-alive battery inside.

Same with a car radio; they have a power lead that goes downstream of the ignition switch and another that goes upstream of the ignition switch that is always powered and keeps the station memory alive. It draws a few mA, always.

I was just going to make the same point. Are you sure there isn't supposed to be a small battery in the receiver?

None of the receivers I have dealt with had any sort of battery in `em.

It's supposed to have a flash memory chip that helps it to "remember" the last settings used.

OK. I guess I'm a little out-dated. Most of those types moved away from the battery a while ago.

Non volatile memory.
