extra light on 3 way

I have a 3 way switch at the top and bottom of stairs to basement. Tried to wire a light at the top of the stairs off of that 3 way but that light goes on when the other lights in the basement go off and vice versa. In the box at the top of the stairs, the red wire is connected to the neutral (white) wire coming from the lower box. ANy suggestions?

Jack

if you want this light to go on and off with the others, you'll need to come off the wire that feeds basement lights. (after the switch)
