even turn off breaker, still show 12 V is this normal
Hi everyone,

I turn off the breaker for a circuit I am working on, the hot wire still show there is 12V, although this is insignificant, just want to know from expert out there, is this normal?

Thank You

Are you using a digital multi-meter (DMM)?
It's probably phantom voltage.

I get a higher reading from 100 foot of wire run underground before I have hooked it to anything on either end.

The DVM is giving you a voltage reading that is not capable of sustaining amps. Phantom voltage, or as we call it A GHOST.

maybe transients?

Thanks for the info, For Speedy Petey, I used those lcd displayed little tester for voltage...

did you try turning off all the other breakers as well?

KUIPORNG 06-14-2006 10:04 AM

No I didn't
No I didn't turn off all other breakers,... I just turn off the one I need to work on...

i don't know what are you working on. usually when i test voltage, if there are no voltage the digits changes, but if you have a voltage it should stay, for example you have 12v it should read 11. something to 12. something. if you're sure it is 12v try use a car light bulb or 12v power tester. 12v won't kill you, but it is safe to have it turned off.
