I currently have an entertainment niche that is located adjacent to a direct vent fireplace. Since the size of my niche restricts me to a 36inch TV I am thinking of performing some wiring so I can put an LED TV above the fireplace.
Since I do not know what wiring I will need as I plan to upgrade my sound system, I thought I could run some sort of tubing since I currently have access into the fireplace box wall. You see, I am currently doing some ceramic tile work and we removed all the tile around the mantle so I have a 2.5 inch gap around the fireplace box that allows me to see in the wall void.
Is it possible to cut a hole in the wall above the fireplace and the side wall of the entertainment center and then drop a flexible conduit tube down the hole and pull it into the hole of the entertainment center. Because I have that 2.5 inch gap around the fireplace, it will assist me to see what I am doing.
One of my worries is how the heat from the fireplace box will affect the wiring. Is there certain precautions I should take? For example, should I use a special tube or would flexible aluminum conduit be okay? Also, if I use the aluminum do I need to worry about the wires melting inside the tube, since it will be in the wall void about 1 foot away from the chimney vent and 1 foot above the fireplace box?
