Hi, I'm looking for some insight on my property. I want to go about it the correct way. I have a 200 amp service to my house, (with 4 empty locations for breakers.) There are 220 amps worth of breakers. Obviously they are not all in current use. House is less than 4 years old. I have a:
Carport, Chicken Coop, Shop that I would like to run electical to. I've been told I need at least a 100 amp service for the shop. This is NOT a commercial shop. I will have a 2 post Bendpak car lift that runs on 220Vac. One day a small welder too.
Chicken Coop: I would like at least one outlet/switch combo
Carport: 2 outlets and a switch for 2 ceiling fans
Shop: 100 amp service
Is it possible to run the 100 amp service from my existing 200 amp service to the house? Or would it make more sense to run another pole to the shop, which would require a meter and additional $20 a month. Even if I don't use any power in the shop.
I want this as safe and correct as possible. I havent ruled out an electrician. I'm just all about doing most anything and love the experience.
I drew a generic blueprint if anyone is interested in seeing the layout.
Thanks for any replys.
Adding the breakers together means nothing.
How big is the shop?
The lift could be 240v and pull 5 amps, or 20 amps.
How far from the house is the shop?
Do you have gas appliances?
Without the specs on the lift and welder, it is only a guess to what size service you need to the shop.
This could be done quite a number of ways.
Can you run a 100A sub panel from your existing 200A service panel? Most likely yes. Can you run a new 100A service panel to your garage? Most likely yes.
You could run a new 100A sub panel to your garage and then feed your car port and chix coop from that. Or you could feed your car port and chix coop from your existing panel. Or you could feed your car port and chix coop from an existing circuit already in use in the area.
The possibilities are numerous.
Without knowing a heck of a lot more detailed info, hard to give specifics.
Specs on the 2 post car lift is: 220Vac, 60hz 1 phase
Small a/c window unit: 115 60hz 1 phase
Welder will be a small unit plugged into 120v
Shop is 100 foot from the home 200amp service
(small power tools with occasion use of a table saw)
Nothing will be run at the same time.
