Electrical addition

Am adding a workshop approx 100 feet away from my barn, which has a 100 AMP service to a 100 AMP box. I want to run power from that box to a 50 AMP sub panel located in my new workshop. I will be running a table saw, chop saw, lighting, router, sander, air compressor and vaccum system, though not all at once (I,m not THAT good). My questions are:

1. What size wire do I need to make that 100 foot run so I can have the 50 AMP service in the shop?
2. Is 50 AMP service enough?
3. Is this the most economical way to accomplish the task?

I believe 230.79(D) will require you to have a min of a 60a service.

1. I would use #6 copper

2. only you can answer that question. look at the name plates of the items you wish to run. how many of them will you be running at once. My guess is that yes it is enough.

3. I would recomend trenching and installing 1" Pvc and pulling in 3 #6 thhn/thwn and 1 #10 GRnd. Pleasae remember all above ground pvc must be sch 80 but the underground sections can be sch 40. most locations it would need to be 18" deep

I also think you need a ground rod. others can confirm this

You assumed correctly. I would rarely have any multiple tools going at once, except my vaccum and maybe the compressor as I work with the table saw. The other issue is the HVAC. I plan to use two thru-wall units much as one sees in a motel room. They would be running while I work, Hope this doesn't mean I need more amps to the shop. I could wire the units on a seperate circuit. They are 110 v units. Your answer helped immensley. Thanks!!

That is the rating on the disconnect.
You can run whatever size to the building under 60 amps, as long as the disconnecting means is rated for 60 amps.

You can run anything larger also, just so the rated disconnect is 60 amp or greater.
