Electric Crazy - Please help
I've attached a drawing of my situation. I removed two switches and a plug from my bathroom that were all junked up, taped, etc. and wanted to replace with new. I made sure each one I switched out the wires on for the other. Then after it didn't work I began moving things according to a book I have. Needless to say it has been days and I still have not figured it out.
It should be simple but the house is pretty old and all the wiring seems crazy. The bathroom has a plug, a switch for fan, and switch for light.
When I removed the old there were two jumpers used and the two white wires were twisted together not attached to anything (unless it came out when I unscrewed it) but had a small amount of wire peeking.
The wires are red, brown (hot), black (hot) which is two blacks joining to form one, black, and the two twisted whites.
It seems that each variation I try turns some hot and vice versa. I tried using the whites but things don't work if they are apart except plug. I can run the fan by joining the hot black and the other black. And to top it off it is also messing with the hallway lights outside the bathroom.
I've purchased 3way and single switches because I think it would just be single but the old ones were 3 way.
I am going crazy here! Can you help?
