Electric Box height

What height does every one prefer to set their switch boxes and recep boxes?

If ADA rules are applicable, there are requirements for height and accessibility.

Receptacles are usually set at "hammer handle" height to the bottom of the box. This can be anywhere from 12-16 inches up, depending on your particular hammer. Be sure to use similar hammers on the same job, or else you can get inconsistent results. :whistling2:

I prefer them to be higher than lower, since as you age (and everybody does), it may become a problem bending over to reach those outlets as your back stiffens up.

I usually place switch and counter-top outlets at 44" to the bottom, making them all consistent. Others prefer to place switches higher, but that is an individual choice.

Finally, things like thermostats are usually placed higher, and we install them at 54" to the bottom.

But if you have short folks involved, you can put `em at a lower height ...

All measurement are to the top of the box for me since I tent to use the same type of boxes. If an oddball is thrown in I use the measurement to the top device hole.

16" std recep
48" switches, kitchen counter recep, garage and unfinished basement recep
44" (or 48") bath vanity recep

On renovations or additions I match the existing.

My Estwing hammer below a 1GNO and 48" to the top of most boxes. Flooring changes will also change the height of the box (mud, tiles, carpet, padding, etc..). 60" for t-stats, wall mount phone jacks (just about obsolete), and refer outlets.

Hammer handle high for receptacles. Counter top 45" to center. Switches other then bathroom 52" to center. Bathroom switches at 54" to center. Handicap depends on your local requirements. I prefer switches at 52" to keep the box out of the drywall seams. 54" switches are above the 4" tile line.
