electric baseboard heaters

we have 2 baseboard heaters controlled by the same thermostat. the areas they are in used to be one room that has since been divided to add a bedroom. the other room is now the family room. needless to say, when we heat the family room, the bedroom is also getting heat and it's really not needed that much. how can we separate the two?

That depends on how the wiring was done (and probably more importantly) how easy it will be get access into the wall to RE-FEED one or the other of the two BB heaters.

My guess is that the circuit from the panel goes to the thermostat and from there
it either splits off to the individual heaters (hope for this)...
or the power is "daisy chained" to the second heater (more likely).

A marginally qualified person should be able to open the junction box where the thermostat is mounted to see which you have.

You didn't say if the existing thermostat is wall mounted or one mounted in one of the baseboard units.

Simply eliminate the wall thermostat, and install individual thermostats on the units themselves.

If one of the units already has a unit stat, then all you need to do is rewire the downstream wire to the line side, and install a separate `stat on the other unit.
