I have noticed that where the power comes into my outbuilding the neutral and earth are linked in a small black connector unit, an earth cable (yellow and green ) is then taken from this connector block to a switch casing, power from this switch is then taken to my dwelling house, when I check between earth and live I am getting 240v , is this correct, I did not think this was right but as it was done by the Hydro Electric Board I assumed it to be correct , help!

Hi Bud

Don't worry the reading of 240v between live and earth is what you should be getting.

The Connection you mention is the PME link (Protective Multiple Earth) done by the electricity supplier to ensure you have an adequate earth to your property.
The old system used to rely on you having an earth stake or rod.

Regards

Chris

Chris, Welcome!

It's great to have an Electrical Tech here from the UK.
You will be a big help.
