Dumb Girl Question re Can Lights

I have recessed incandescent can lights in my basement. I am painting the ceiling which is drywall w/ stamped texture. I have to either tape around 8 recessed lights, not that easy, or figure out how to put them back up once they are pulled down.

In my explorations i have pulled two down and there are two tabs with a v on the end attached on opposite sides of the actual bulb fixture. They are tensioned/springy and i am sure are supposed to hold the trim flush with the ceiling. Somehow. I am almost sure the elec installed those after the housing etc and that i should be able to pull those down, paint and put them back up. But i want to figure out how to get the two i have down up before I take all the others down.

I have been reading and there are supposedly slots up there the tabs fit in, okay which slots ? I have tried everything online i can find. There are some that are just slots, some that stick out a little bit and some that are at a slant. None seems to work for me. Is there a tool, a trick, a secret i do not know? I hate to pay an electrician to come out and show me how to do this. I am going to get pictures, is it hard to post here? Do i use photobucket?

Dumb Girl Question re Can Lights

All trim rings I have ever seen are held in place by little springs, one end attached to the ring, the other end attached up in the housing. The attach point at the trim ring is similar to as you describe, with a loop on the end of the spring going through the tab. To remove them, I use needle-nose pliars to unhook the spring loop from the tab.

Do you not have these springs?

I do not have those springs. They are like tabs with a v notch on the end.

Here is a picture http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/a...0/100_6759.jpg

and here is another one of the inside

If I am not mistaken, those tabs are just pushed in toward the light and the whole trim ring is pushed into the housing. The outward pressure from the tabs keep the trim ring in place.

Just push them up and toward the center of the trim ring. Then push the trim ring into the fixture. Once pushed up just move the ring around until it is centered.
