A dual switch question
I need to install a dual switch for fan/light fixture.
I did this kind of work before, so I do not understand what I did wrong.
I have a red/black/white/green wire running from the fixture box
to the dual switch (the switch is not faulty, I checked it).
I connected the black hot wire to the switch per instructions (on the right, where the bridge for two circuits is).
I connected red and black wire to each of the screws on the left of the switch per instructions.
I went to the garage and turned the breaker on. No short.
I went upstairs and turned swithes on. No short.
I thought everything is OK, so I took electrical tester and tried to check
that both fan and light circuits work.
What happened is that as soon as I contacted black and white wires with my tester, a spark occurred and a contact on my tester partially melted.
Does anybody know what caused it?

contact white and black with same tester probe?
The tester is a simple one, two wires with a led light in between. No settings. I used it before. After a contact partially melted I used the tester on the outlet, it works.
I did not contact white and black with the same probe. In fact, after I had this happened, I rechecked the wiring, and tested again. Same result.
Where is power fed for this circuit? Is it fed to the ceiling box or to the switch box? You say there is a blk, red, and white wire at the switch. Do they all come from the same cable? Is there any other cables in the switch box?
The power is fed to the switch box.
The power comes with black/white/ground wires.
The dual switch feeds both black and red wires coming from the fan/lights.
There are no other wires in the box.
The set up is pretty simple and standard.
