Doorbell Transformer Problem

I've got a bit of a problem, my doorbell quit working and I have decided that the transformer is bad. That is not my problem. Finding the dead transformer is the problem. When I had the house built in 1980 the electrician located the transformer in the attic and it worked flawlessly for over 30 yrs. The problem is that over the years the cellulose insulation settled and I had more blown in, a couple of times, and now the transformer is buried under the insulation. I thought I knew where it is located but its not where I thought it was. I have tried feeling around with a stick but no luck. Anybody got an idea how to locate it? I thought about a metal detector but I do not have one or know anybody that does. I tried to find the wires from the buttons but they do not go all the way up to the attic at the doors. I tried following wires that I found in the insulation but none of them led to the transformer. Anybody got anything?:wallbash:

Metal Detector and a scuba mask.

I got tired of those things years ago and now install wireless ones.
No more loose, corroded connections, no transformers, can add a back door one that has a differant chime.

First...verify that it is dead with a meter at the pushbutton. Then you can use a tone generator and a tracer to locate where the wires end.....like the phone company uses.

I would look above all the light fixtures. They probably installed on an existing box rather than install a box just for the transformer.

Find the receiver and look around. They are usually found in closets.(older homes)
