Doorbell stops working after power outage
I have a doorbell with musical chime. Diode installed at only button on front door. Doorbell stops working after power outage. Does anyone know why or how to fix? Dave
How about starting with the make and model number of the chime.

YOu will need to start measuring voltages starting at the doorbell transformer probably mounted near the breaker panel.
Often the low voltage circuit to the doorbell is not grounded. So you cannot count on measuring between a terminal and (the nearest) ground.
TUrn off power before doing continuity measurements (using the ohms or continuity function of a meter).
A long wire (say 100 feet, single conductor, with alligator clips at the ends) can come in handy for measuring voltage between a terminal in one part of the house and a terminal in another part of the house.
the transformer is most likely bad. Replace it and all will be fine.
time out. Do you mean the power goes out, and then when the power comes on, the doorbell is out? (if your power is out, the bell wont work!!!)
I only ask cause some people dont realize that the doorbell transformer is usually mounted to the panel.
i just changed my entire system, new line, and new transformer.
i was intimidated, but was really easy to remove and install a new transformer.
if the power goes out, again. insure the following.
the power is back on.
the breakers are all on...as one will probably be tied to the bell transformer.
go to the chime and check to see (when the bell is pressed to close the circuit) that current is flowing to the chime.
set a volt meter to the right setting (most bells are not higher than 16 volts from the transformer to as low as 8) place the red lead on the line in to the chime and the black to the out to the transformer. The chime is probably marked T transformer , F front bell, and R rear bell.
when pressed you should see current running to the bell.
also you can 1st place a the leads of the transformers two leads and see that your getting at least 8 volts from that.
