Do I need any special receptacles for the garage?

Was looking at receptacles at the box store this morning, and was wondering if there's any requirement or reason for buying the expensive ($5.00 each) heavy duty ones or are the regular "pro grade" (1.50) ok for the garage? I'll have a GFCI at the beginning of the circuit and then 8 or 9 scattered around in metallic boxes attached to emt.

As long as they are protected by GFCI you are fine. But depending on where you live you might need to get Tamper Resister receptacles. Most states require them now anyways.

I would go with the heavy duty, you usually have a lot of plugging and unplugging in a garage or shop. "pro grade" is a miss leading label.

If you will be using these outlets frequently (plugging stuff in a lot) then the pro grade outlets will last longer and stand up better to the abuse. If these will just be used occasionally or for equipment that just stays plugged in (like a sprinkler system) then there would be no reason to go for the pro-grade. Most garages don't need the pro grade outlets, but if you forsee using these outlets a lot then you may want to think about getting the more expensive ones.

Correct. Most pros use the 0.39 cent ones.

Just put a gfci in and feed the other receptacles with it.

About the receptacle...How about pick up a $1.50 and a 39cent and decide for yourself.

my outlets are about 30 years old and i don't have gfi's in the kitchen and bath...nonetheless, i would use the cheapest outlets by leviton or cooper, ya know the .39 cent ones...that is what I would use in my own home

I'm no pro but for my pc I use hospital grade plugs
