DIY Replace Ballast?

HI: I have 3 undercounter double bulb florescents (12in 8watt ea) on the same circuit. One of the fixtures is ok. The second and third have the problem.

On one, the bulb is very slow to light. On the second, on the opposite side of the fixture it does not light at all. The third works fine.

How do I change the ballasts in these? I tried pulling on them. NO good. I tried twisting them, no good. I tried pushing & twisting. NO good.

Is this a DIY deal? Is it worth repairing these or should I replace instead. They are about 12 yrs old.

Tx,

Tom

Sorry, I DID replace the bulbs. opps.

DIY Replace Ballast?

Honestly, instead of spending a lot of time and money on replacing ballasts and/or starters, sometimes it's more economical just to replace the fixture if you tried new tubes.

DIY Replace Ballast?

Tx. They are hardwires. Is it just a simple pull out old and hook the wires up new with the twist nuts? There is BX coming out of the wall to the fixtures.

yes, feel free to re-use the old twist nuts as long as they aren't dry rotted brittle, etc. In a lot of cases in just a little more cost effective just to replace the fixture if it's just a regular fixture.

Do they have separate replaceable starters? Often it is the starter (the little "can" about 3/4 inch in diameter and 1-1/2 inches long you twist just a little and pull out) rather than the ballast that is bad.

Teh ballast (typically 6 x 2 x 1 rectangular for a fixture like this) must be matched to the fluorescent tubes. If the ballast goes, it's usually better to replace the whole fixture.
