A smoke alarm is a stand alone unit, may be battery powered, 110V or 110V w/battery back up. By stand alone unit I mean it is not wired to a fire or burg panel. It may be wired other smoke alarms

A smoke detector is wired to a fire or burg panel.

Do you have a smoke alarm or smoke detector?

If it is a smoke alarm, you can install a smoke detector in its place. You are aware the smoke detector needs to be compatable with the fire or burg panel?

there are wireless smoke detectors also, but the panel must also be wireless.
