dimmer switch problem
i install a dimmer switch on the wall i had a black and a white wire the dimmer turns the lights on but does not dimm
The dimmer may be bad or your could have fried it if you attempted to connect it while the power was still on.
Your title could have been more descriptive of your actual question.
Dimmer switch not working
If the light bulbs are not compatible with the switch, ie... incandescent dimmer and fluorescent bulbs, this can cause this problem. In this case just change the bulbs or select a dimmer that is compatible with fluorescent bulbs.
If the white wire was originally on the previous standard switch, the color should not have any bearing on the situation. A white wire used as a hot wire, (although may not be indicated as such with colored tape), is often used in a switch loop where the neutral connection is made elsewhere. In such cases the circuit would have been run to the light first, connecting the neutral directly to the light and dropping down to the switch with a black and white to create the loop back to the light.
A white wire can also be used as a traveler wire in conjunction with a 3 way or 4 way switch configuration. In either case a white wire being used as a hot or line wire should be wrapped in colored coded tape to indicate how it is being used.
Hope this helps.
You need to find out if the dimmer works properly first !
It could be faulty, even if it is new.
Get an extention lead, cut into the hot line,
wire the dimmer in.
Hook up a lamp and test for correct operation.
You also need to test and find out if the switch loop
is correctly wired into the hot line,(correct).
and not the neutral line,(incorrect).
If it is wrongly wired into the neutral line,
it will still switch the light off and on,
But a dimmer wont work.
