Dimmer Installation in Old Building

I purchased a Lutron dimmer that has 2 black wires and one green. However, my bathroom outlet box does not have a green or copper wire. Connected to the switch is a red wire in the top screw and a black wire in the bottom screw. Within the outlet box it appears as if 3 black wires are capped together (one of the three is the black wire from the switch). Finally, tucked in the back of the outlet are 2 white wires (capped).

Again, there is not a green or copper wire anywhere in the outlet box. My question: Can I install this dimmer without a green wire? I am a renter in a post-war building. FYI - I installed a new vanity light earlier this week and there was no green wire there either. I contacted the Electrical Dept. at Home Depot and the representative told me that the green wire was not necessary, so I proceeded with the installation and have not experienced any problems. He also mentioned that most older apartments in NYC are not wired with the green grounding wires. Thanks!

For liability issues you should not be doing electrical work in a rental.
