detached garage box codes

i was reading on here and somewhere it read that some inspectors might consider a detached garage commercial is some way shape or form and i was wondering if could use plastic boxes through out or do i have to use metal boxes for my junction and ceiling boxes (or any at that)? Thought it would be no problem to use plastic boxes but some how i have a feeling that it needs to be metal.

my thinking is, i'm running 12/2 like any residential for everything (no conduit) so i wouldn't need any metal boxes. Is this accurate?

thanks
thomas

oh also, how about one 3way switch for multiple light fixtures. i'm hanging 6 porselain light fixtures with halogen bulbs. i was thinking of putting 3 lights on one set of 3way switchs and 3 on another 3way setup. is this possible if i have the three light running to a junction box and running the 3way switches to power the j/boxes? thanks for your help

You can use plastic boxes in your detached garage. You cannot attach conduit to those boxes anyway. There may be a local rule for this, so call your local building codes dept. and ask them.

You can use three way switches if you like. You can use four way if you like. Drawings are available on this site for connections.

Do you have a sub panel in your detached garage?
