Decora rocker switches

For a standard toggle switch, it's consistent. You flip the switch UP to turn ON, the switch points down it's OFF.

What is the standard for a decora rocker switch?

I know there may not be a standard but may be at least a common convention? Similar to a receptacle you can mount it however but most would do it with the ground in the middle facing down.

For a rocker do you press the TOP of the rocker to switch it ON or OFF?

I have some one way and some another way in different rooms done bt different people over time, drives me crazy especially those switched receptacle no way to tell visually. At least for a light if it's lit it's ON if it's not lit then OFF or bad bulb.

Which way is a rocker supposed to be mounted?

Decora rocker switches

There should be a stamped label that has the word TOP for the switch.
The only difference is the decora doesn't have on/of on them.

Decora rocker switches

For a 2 pole Decora press the top to turn the switch on. For 3 and 4 pole Decora (and standard toggles) there is no on or off.

And not everyone agrees that a receptacle ground should be down (there is no code).

Agree. Press the top of a rocker to turn on.

Decora rocker switches

Most case you will find the word TOP stamped on the metal yoke so you can not miss that unless it was paint covered then look at the termation screws that will be a give away answer.

Merci,
Marc
